Biddeford-Saco
Saco

The
Biddeford-Saco Country Club is really two distinct courses
with the original nine being designed by the venerable Donald
Ross back in the 1920's (for a whopping $15,500!) and the
back by the team of Cornish and Silva in the 1980's. The two
nines complement each other with the front being fairly wide
open off the tee but devilishly difficult around the subtle
Ross greens and the back much tighter and more modern feeling.
As recently as 1995, Golf Digest named Biddeford-Saco one
of Maine's Top 10 courses open to the public.
Several
holes stand out as being exceptional. The photo above depicts
the 9th green and clubhouse. Although it appears benign in
the photo, this par 4 measures a stern 438 from the tips and
often plays directly into wind. After making the turn the
first shot you will face is a steep downhill par three fronted
by water and then it's on the the 11th, another bruising par
4 (460 from the back tee!) that will not only test your length
but has rather severe green that has produced many a three
putt.
Not
a long course by modern standards, this course will force
you to hit every club in your bag and requires soft touch
around the greens. As you sit on the deck after your round
you will wonder how this course, at under 6000 yards, did
not surrender a better score. Then, you will make plans to
try again.
