samoset

With sweeping views of Penobscot Bay’s rugged coast and entrancing woodlands, the 6,548-yard Samoset is as much about a walk in nature as it is about golf. In this picturesque setting, the course has developed its own personality. One that meanders through thickets of trees, around oceans of sand traps and over wooden bridges.

Rich landscaping and a sea of bunkers do more than add beauty to the course, as any golfer who has challenged Samoset can attest. The course’s water hazards — seven of the holes are Oceanside — and unpredictable winds can play havoc on even the most seasoned player. The Samoset is a century-old classic that consistently ranks among today’s best.

Samoset is home to one of Golf Digest’s “Architecture Award 2007-2008 Best Courses in the State”. Designed by Robert Elder in 1902, Samoset celebrated its centennial year in 2002. Samoset’s signature fourth hole — a par five measuring 503 yards — sets the stage for the course. Running from tee to green along the sea, the dogleg left teasingly invites players to drive across the ocean.

Whether golfers take the risk or layup, they face a green heavily guarded from front to back by an expansion of deep white bunkers.

Renovations by the Maine-based Bradley Booth, featuring what is regarded as the best finishing hole in the state, have strengthened the resort’s reputation as a premier championship layout.

The course’s 474 yard par four 18th is one of the most challenging finishing holes in New England. Protected by water on the left and trees on the right, the hole requires precision golf to reach its tiered green.

Samoset is a golfer’s paradise — located in Mid-Coast Maine. Open from May through October, the cart path only Samoset Resort Golf Club features a driving range with three target greens, short game facility, practice green and a clubhouse with locker rooms, pro shop, rental facilities and full service Clubhouse Grille. Samoset is one of the most aesthetic courses in America that will leave you breathless.
